The situation
A customer needed to replace a Suburban SFV-35Q furnace and wanted to know which current model takes its place. Suburban no longer builds the SFV-35Q.
The short answer
The Suburban SF-35VHQ is the direct replacement. It supersedes the SFV-35Q, and ducting, wiring, and dimensions are all the same.
Why
The change is about mounting orientation, not capacity. The old SFV designation meant a vertical-mount unit, while VH in SF-35VHQ means the furnace installs horizontally or vertically. Suburban consolidated the separate orientation-specific part numbers into one dual-orientation unit, so a single model now covers what used to take two. You'll see the same pattern elsewhere in the line — the SF-42VHQ supersedes both the SF-42Q and the SFV-42Q.
Everything that matters for a swap carries over on the 35,000 BTU unit:
- 35,000 BTU/h input, LP propane
- 12V DC, 8 amp draw
- 4 × 4" supply ducts, 55 sq in return air
- 7.5" × 17" × 20", 29 lbs
No duct rework, no rewiring, no cabinet modification.
What to do
- Check your gas connection location before ordering. This is the one place people order the wrong unit. The SF-35VHQ is the Q variant, with gas on the right side — matching your SFV-35Q. If your furnace instead connects gas at the front, you have an F-series unit and want the SF-35VHFQ.
- Order the SF-35VHQ. It ships with vents, mounting screws, and the installation manual. An exterior access door is not included — if yours isn't reusable, you'll need one separately.
- Before replacing the whole furnace: if the symptom is failure to ignite rather than a dead blower, the culprit is often the igniter electrode. The 525051 electrode kit is the SF/SFV Q and FQ specific part, and the 525009 assembly covers a broader SF/SFV range. Both are a small fraction of a full furnace and worth ruling out first.
- Have a qualified RV technician handle the install and leak-test the gas connections afterward.
