The situation
A customer asked whether the Magic Chef MCG992ARB would replace her MCD991ARB. Both are 0.9 cubic foot units, and she planned to reuse the trim kit already in her cabinet.
The short answer
The MCG992ARB will typically fit in the space, but it will not work properly with your existing trim kit. The MCG992ARB is roughly an inch narrower than the MCD991ARB, and we do not currently offer a trim kit for this microwave. It's meant as an exact-unit swap.
Why
The catch is that "0.9 cubic feet" describes the interior capacity, not the outside of the box. Two microwaves can share a capacity rating and still have different exterior dimensions — and a trim kit cares only about the exterior.
A trim kit is cut to the width of the specific model it was built for. It frames that microwave and fastens to it. Drop in a unit an inch narrower and you're left with a gap down the side and nothing in the right place to mount to. It won't look finished and it won't hold properly.
So there are really two questions hiding inside one:
- Will it fit the cabinet opening? Usually yes — the opening is bigger than the microwave.
- Will your existing trim kit close it in? No, not on this pairing.
The microwave itself is a capable unit — 0.9 cu ft, 900 watts, 10 power levels, auto cook and auto defrost menus, child safety lock, 27.1 lbs. It's available in black as the MCG992ARB or stainless as the MCG992ARS. The trim kit is the only obstacle.
What to do
- Look at how your current microwave is installed. If it's framed into the cabinet with a trim kit, that kit is matched to the MCD991ARB and won't carry over.
- If you're trimmed out, this isn't a clean swap. Your options are sourcing an exact MCD991ARB replacement so the existing kit still fits, or accepting that the cabinet opening will need to be finished a different way.
- If your installation doesn't use a trim kit — countertop placement, custom cabinetry, an opening finished some other way — the MCG992ARB is a straightforward replacement.
- Pick your finish. Black or stainless; identical otherwise.
- Know the condition before ordering. These may carry minor warehouse dust or light cosmetic denting, usually on the vent piece. Neither affects function, and they're backed by a 1-year RV Surplus warranty.
- Have a qualified RV technician handle the install if you're not familiar with the mounting and venting requirements — it involves 120V AC wiring and cabinet ventilation.
