- Clean that surface with ammonia or mineral spirits
- Apply a bead of new thermal mastic — use all of the mastic provided
- Screw the new cooling unit into place
- Reverse the previous steps to reinstall the refrigerator
Troubleshooting Note
Common symptoms indicating cooling unit failure:
- Refrigerator won't cool despite proper power
- Ammonia smell inside or behind the refrigerator
- Yellow staining behind the refrigerator (indicates ammonia leak)
- Refrigerator worked fine but stopped cooling suddenly
Before assuming the cooling unit needs replacement, rule out simpler causes — power supply, thermistor, control board, gas valve, or ventilation issues. Our RV Refrigerator Not Cooling troubleshooting guide walks through the typical diagnostic path.
⚠️ Professional Installation Highly Recommended
Cooling unit replacement is a 3-5 hour job involving complete refrigerator removal, propane disconnection, and thermal mastic application. Improper installation can result in poor cooling performance, thermal mastic gaps, or ongoing service issues. Installation should be performed by a qualified RV service technician unless you have prior experience with refrigerator cooling unit replacement.
